COLLOQUIUM: Merrian Goggio Borgeson

October 7, 2015 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm PDT

Merrian Borgeson SPEAKER: Merrian Borgeson Natural Resource Defense Council DATE: Wednesday, October 7, 2015 TIME: 4:00 P.M. PLACE: 126 Barrows Hall TITLE: From Vision into Practicality: The Question of How to Get Carbon Out of Buildings In California, fossil fuel burned in buildings accounts for 12% of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), as compared to 11% from in-state electricity generation. If we’re serious about long-term climate targets, we quickly need to turn our attention to how to avoid this source of emissions. Electrify end-uses with renewable energy? Decarbonize the gas supply? Something else? The options for how to do this will be challenging on multiple levels – physical, economic, logistical, and political. Merrian will discuss some of the options and practical considerations for addressing these challenges, and engage the group to explore the pathways forward. As a bonus topic, she will also provide a quick update on the 2015 legislation just signed by Governor Brown. Merrian (ERG MA ’09, Haas MBA ’08) champions clean energy and climate policy as a Senior Scientist at NRDC. Merrian’s work focuses on transforming the energy sector to accelerate the transition to an energy future dominated by energy efficiency and renewable energy. She provides policy analysis and strategic guidance to policy makers and other stakeholders at the state, regional and national levels. She was previously a researcher and technical assistance team lead at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, focused on the financing and deployment of energy efficiency and renewable energy. She is married to an ERGie (Sam) and has an ERGie offspring (Owen, almost 2).
