TED NORDHAUS – Climate Policy After 2C

October 16, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm PDT

THE ENERGY AND RESOURCES GROUP FALL 2019 COLLOQUIUM SERIES PRESENTS: SPEAKER: TED NORDHAUS DATE: Wednesday, October 16, 2019 TIME: 4:00-5:30pm PLACE: 126 Barrows TITLE: Climate Policy After 2C DESCRIPTION: One year ago, the IPCC’s released its SR15 report, which has focused public debate and activism upon demands to stabilize global temperatures at 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. Ironically, these demands come at a moment at which it is increasingly clear that limiting warming to 2C will be extremely challenging, much less 1.5C. What would a more realistic agenda for climate mitigation and adaptation look like? What moral hazards might be associated with the continuing insistence that implausible emissions and temperature targets are realistic? How best can global policy-makers manage climate risk for a future that is likely to be much hotter than the present, even if human societies undertake ambitious mitigation efforts. SPEAKER: Ted Nordhaus is a leading global thinker on energy, environment, climate, human development, and politics. He is the founder and executive director of the Breakthrough Institute and a co-author ofAn Ecomodernist Manifesto. Over the last decade, he has helped lead a paradigm shift in climate, energy, and environmental policy. He was among the first to emphasize the imperative to “make clean energy cheap” in The Harvard Law and Policy Review, explained why efforts to establish legally binding international limits on greenhouse gas emissions would fail in The Washington Post and Democracy Journal, made the case for nuclear energy as a critical global warming solution in The Wall Street Journal, has written on the limits to energy efficiency and the need to prepare for climate change in The New York Times, and has argued for the importance of intensifying agricultural production in order to spare land for forests and biodiversity in Scientific American and The Guardian.
