PROF. DR. NIKLAS HÖHNE – Progress in Global Climate Action

NIKLAS HÖHNE Lawrence Berkeley National Lab NewClimate Institute DATE: Wednesday, September 11, 2019 TIME: 4:00-5:30pm PLACE: 126 Barrows TITLE: Progress in global climate action – Overview of recent actions and opportunities DESCRIPTION: Climate change requires urgent action. Regular tracking of the actions by the various actors is necessary to evaluate how far the world is progressing to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change to hold global average temperature increase well below 2°C and to make efforts to hold it below 1.5°C. The presentation will include most recent updates of energy and climate policies in major emitting countries and their effect on global greenhouse gas emissions and whether they will be sufficient to meet their climate action proposals (NDCs). It is based on the Climate Action Tracker and the UNEP Emissions Gap report. It will also include updates on actions and potential by regions, states, cities and businesses and opportunities to scale up climate action in selected countries and sectors using a simplified bottom up book-keeping model (PROSPECTS). SPEAKER: Prof. Dr. Niklas Höhne is currently an affiliate at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. He is a founding partner of NewClimate Institute, Cologne, Germany, and Special Professor “mitigation of greenhouse gases” at Wageningen University, The Netherlands. He has followed the international climate negotiations since 1995. He has led numerous studies related to the international climate change negotiations and national climate policies, for example several evaluations of countries’ performances in Climate Change and two publications in Nature. Niklas Höhne is the lead author for the IPCC Fourth and Fifth Assessment Report for the chapter on climate policies and international cooperation. He is also the lead author of the UNEP Emissions Gap reports 2010 to 2019. He created the Climate Action Tracker that tracks commitments and actions of countries on climate change.
