ALUMNI PANEL – Achieving Liveable, Equitable, Sustainable Communities

THE ENERGY AND RESOURCES GROUP FALL 2019 COLLOQUIUM SERIES PRESENTS: SPEAKERS: Louise Bedsworth, Zack Subin, Jeff Hobson, Merrian Borgeson DATE: Wednesday, December 4, 2019 TIME: 4:00-5:30pm PLACE: 126 Barrows TITLE: Achieving Liveable, Equitable, Sustainable Communities DESCRIPTION: This colloquium features a panel of four accomplished Energy and Resources Group alumni who are leading advocates for liveable, equitable communities that address large-scale challenges like gridlock and climate change. ERG student Emma Tome will facilitate discussion of the panelists’ academic and career paths, as well as current challenges these ERGies are tackling in their work within government, NGO and private-sector organizations. SPEAKERS: Louise Bedsworth: Louise Bedsworth is the Executive Director of the Strategic Growth Council, a state agency that brings together multiple agencies and departments to support sustainable communities emphasizing strong economies, social equity and environmental stewardship climate change, and transportation. Zack Subin: Zack Subin conducts deep decarbonization scenario analysis at Energy + Environmental Economics (E3). Recently, he has focused on building electrification and carbon neutrality. He volunteers with the pro-housing YIMBY Action network and leads the affiliated club Urban Environmentalists. He finished his PhD in ERG in 2012 with a focus on climate science & policy. Jeff Hobson: Jeff Hobson has helped shape transportation and land use decisions in the San Francisco Bay Area and California for over 20 years, working as both an advocate and an agency planning director. He helped build TransForm into California’s leading transportation reform group, promoting walkable communities with excellent transportation choices. He now works as an independent consultant. Merrian Borgeson: Merrian Borgeson is a Senior Scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). She champions stronger climate policies by providing analysis and strategic guidance to help us shift to efficient, renewable energy. She works closely with policymakers and stakeholders at the state, regional and national levels.
